In contemporary society, most countries tend to allocate parts of budget for the renovation of old buildings while some citizens advocate that this expenditure is supposed to be invested in the construction of new dwellings or road development. As far as I am concerned, I partly disagree with the viewpoint held by them.
It is widely acknowledged that many old buildings are protected today because of their significance of historical value. Like the native language, many historical buildings form a cultural identity and keep a unique record of a country. If the authority fails to protect those architectures, it would be a great loss to national culture. In addition, reservation of these historical buildings can actually boost the country’s tourism. For example, China’s summer palace, or France’s Musee du Louvre, both of which are seen as landmarks of the city and nation, attract numerous tourists every year, bringing millions of dollars in revenue for the vernment.
Nevertheless, calling for renovation of historical buildings does not mean that we are not advocating equal treatment for all old buildings. Those dilapidated buildings with great safety hazard in downtown had better be demolished instead of being restored. Thus, vernments can allocate its limited budget to new residences construction and road development, which can generate more benefits. For one thing, inhabitants have chances to live in houses with a comfortable environment. For another, suitable road planning can be implemented to satisfy the demands of public transportation.
In conclusion, historical buildings deserve public funding for its protection; otherwise, parts of human civilization would vanish in the years to come. |
