History is a compulsory course in most primary and secondary schools. However, some people think it is unnecessary for all children to study this subject that is not relevant to their lives. This essay will discuss the viewpoints for and against learning history.
In most countries, students are required to understand the history of their mother countries, which is considered as essential for enhancing their sense of honor. For example, a Chinese student would feel proud of his motherland after he learns the splendid civilization created by ancient Chinese people. Also, history is similar to a mirror, from which people can draw on experience and learn a lesson. A od example is the two world wars that happened in the 20th century. By analyzing the causes and effects of the two events, people would better cherish the peace today and prevent such disasters from happening again. Therefore, it is important for children to know the history of the world and the mankind.
On the other hand, some people argued that history is all related to the past and students should put their effort in more useful subjects for better individual development. For instance, if they want to be engineers, they should concentrate on the study of science subjects. If they plan to abroad, they should work hard to improve their English skills. No company or university would consider a candidate’s knowledge about history in job or enrollment application.
To sum up, history learning is of great significance. Apart from history learning, due attention needs to be attached to other practical disciplines. |
